Theme songs associated with leaving

I suspect that a lot of people who go abroad have or adopt  theme songs that they associate with their migration. They could be songs about love, about missing someone or something sentimental that tugs the heartstrings. Here are some songs I suspect that are relevant to people who have left  or will leave for abroad.

1) Leaving on a jet plan-- Corny as it may sound, this is a theme song of sorts of many I have met.

2) Kaibigan  by APO-- I know this is popular because when we did a concert in Saudi, people were crying when we sang this. It expresses an anxiety about their loved ones, and the possibility of their having someone else back home while they suffer in a foreign country.

3)  Weekend in New England-- This Barry Manilow song can really get to you when you miss someone really badly

4) Awit ng Barkada by APO--This is everyone's song when they miss the old barkada

5) Babalik ka rin--by Gary V. This was a song commisioned by Duty Free that became quite popular

6)  Home by Diana Ross

 7) A whole New World--This Dysney song by Lea Salonga talks about the joy of discovery.

These are some songs I know that touch people who have left the country. It can make them feel really sentimental and so missing home. Care to add some more?  What songs move you?

Hi Jim. I would add Hahanapin Ko by Anthony Castello, Manila by the Hotdog, Million Miles Away by Joey Albert, Saan Ka Man Naroroon by Ryan Cayabayab (One Album), Alalahanin Gunitain by Dulaang Sibol Choir, Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin (and Barry Manilow) and So Far Away by Carol King. I don't have a clear explanation but Long Ago and Far Away by James Taylor seems to be apt too (in You Tube, James says the song is about not always getting what you want), as well as Florante's Handog.

P.S. I made a montage (using www.onetruemedia.com) using Awit ng Barkada as the song when I just migrated 2 years ago, and met with my barkada in Manhattan!

in my life - by the Beatles - Naiyak ako nung pinakinggan ko yun sa discman ko after nung high school graduation ko palabas ng gate ng school. lagi ko kasi nareremember lahat ng mga pinagsamahan, kalokohan, tawanan at yung mga pinagdaanan namin ng barkada ko. ngayon narerealize ko yung sarap ng buhay nung high school ako. kahit wala masyadong pera, sobra namang saya. kahit 50 pesos lang yung pera ng buong barkada, masaya na kami basta lahat kami may yosi.

That's a great song. I associate that with people I have loved. But lately, it has become a theme song to remember those whom I loved  who have passed away.

Hello Mr. Jim Paredes i'm an avid fan of APO. I'm Marc Philip from Tayug, Pangasinan and working here in Saudi Arabia, as a music lover like me here are my list of song to my loved one's:

1. Here without you by 3 doors down - This song is for my girlfriend in the Philippines, every time I hear this song on my mp3 player diko mapigilang maalala ang mga memories namin, i'm working here for more than a year now and I miss her so much.

2. Perfect by Simple Plan - ito naman for my parents, although this song is punk rock, I really love the lyrics I can relate myself on the lyrics because ako yung taong maraming pagkakamali sa buhay and thats why i'm here in Saudi Arabia I know this is the time makabawi ako sa kanila (parents).

3. Leving on A Jetplane - This is the song nung nagvideoke trip kami nila tessa and marie (my sisters) before I leave the country,  masaya kami nun but di nila alam nung pumunta ako ng restroom diko mapigilang umiyak, We are three ako ang panganay kahit dika kami showy sa feelings namin sa isa't isa pinapakita namin ang love and care namin thru action sometimes joking etc. basta masya we have lots of memories together kasi nung nagcollege na kami sa manila na kami tumira ng mga kapatid ko while our parents nasa panagasinan,

4. Awit ng Barkada by APO - every gathering naming magbabarkada lagi namin kinakanta ito because once a year after christmas nagkikita kami ng mga childhood friends ko sa pangasinan, unfortunately I was not able to attend last 2007 gathering kasi andito na ako, I really miss them especially yung mga handa naming pagkain sobrang dami!

5. Pumapatak ang ulan by APO/Parokya ni Edgar - Everytime I hear this song napapangiti lang ako.. and the main reason is... Namimiss ko ang ulan because here in Saudi Arabia it doesn't rain kung meron man maybe 2 or 3 times in one year, namimiss ko ang bagyo, ang baha, kumain ng daing pag tag ulan, ang sarap bumalik sa Pinas!

This is my songs.. Nakakamiss silang lahat.

Hey Marc,

That's a great list. Like you, I notice that there's nothong like songs that can really bring us back home. These 'soundtracks of our lives' bring back the feelings we have for people we love and the things we loved to do.

Glad that APO music is part of your colection of soundtracks.
